Default 2017 New Owner Initial Thoughts

I traded in my '05 Duramax last Friday with some trepidation for a 2017 Tundra 5.7 (SR5 model). I tow a vintage Airstream and loved the way my diesel hauled it around. My research (especially my favorite Car and Driver) wasn't very reassuring. Turns out the criticisms leveled at the Tundra turned out to be things I especially like about it. When they say "10 year old engine" what I hear is "tried and true". I've only towed my Airstream about 10 miles to check it out, but it appears as if she have nothing to worry about regarding my Tundra's towing ability. I know it's an old argument (gas vs diesel), but my opinion isn't the power that's important it's ^where* that power resides in the RPM band. Back to the Tundra. The refinement compared to my GMC is just off the charts. I know I've only had it 6 days and it only has 212 miles on it, but I've yet to find something that I don't like! The bottom line is that I bought two Toyotas ('85 Tercel and a '95 4Runner) brand new and (coincidentally) owned them both 10 1/2 years. I sold them both before I "had to" and hope this Tundra will follow suit. Glad to have found this group! Thanks in advance for all of the advice/help I'll find.

Welcome to the site! How big is the Airstream and where are the pics of it?

I joined an airstream forum about 10 years ago just to drool.

It is a '75 Tradewind. When I purchased it about 8 years ago it was a storage shed. I've done more work on it than I can list (and still have some stuff to do). I don't plan on making the finish "mirror" like. We happen to appreciate the patina. My wife and I were visiting relatives in Ohio a few weeks back and were thrilled to tour the factory while there. I bought the silver Tundra to match it...

Very nice!! It looks like about 25 feet? What is the dry weight? The reason I ask is because your truck needs to have a weight distributing hitch to tow anything over 5K.

It is 25'. It's dry weight is 4110 lbs. I rarely tow with water and prefer filling it wherever we end up. That's not always possible so there are times the 40 gallon fresh water tank is full.

I can certainly tell you that my trailer is photogenic... that is, it doesn't look quite as nice in person (although I think she's beautiful!). The silver Tundra compliments it well.

40 gallons of water is about 300 lbs. Even with the water and some gear you can stay under 5K. That truck will pull that like a champ. Good luck with that rig!!

I live in Reno so camping around here is amazing. From desert lakes (Pyramid Lake shore in one pict below) to mountain lakes to the west.

    Thanks for the gracious welcome!

Nice pictures. You weren't towing that Airstream with that Element, were you?

After viewing this thread I looked on C/L to see if any Airstreams were for sale. Why do Airstream owners think that they are worth so much? Even in bad shape?
