In 1984, I was 14 years old. Riverside Raceway was where the Moreno Valley mall sits now. My parents friend worked for a company called Pro Products and they were one of Ivan's sponsors. We were invited to the races that year. We were brought into the hospitality tent and were able to meet Ivan in person. At the end of the race, Ivan won, he came over and gave me the Scott goggles that he wore during that race. He autographed them and handed them to me and shook my hand. I was a kid in a literal candy store. Ten years later, I was working for Toyota in Torrance in the Accessory Sales and Marketing department. Every morning when I would come in, I would go through the warranty department and see a guy named Reg Melling. He was directly involved in the Toyota off road racing team. At this point I was part of a Score Class 7s race team from Toyota of Garden Grove with Bob Graham, Brady Helm and Pete Swift. Reg knew this and one day asked me if I would like to help out at that years Baja 500. I told him Hell yeah. So I worked it out with my team and pulled double duty for both of the Toyota teams. It also happened to be Ivan's 50th birthday, so Toyota was throwing him a huge party down in Ensenada. At the party, I was able to steal some time to talk with Ivan. What a cool dude. I told him about the time 10 years prior when I met him at Riverside raceway, and he remembered giving those goggles to me. I was floored. Ivan is and always will be the Iron Man of off road racing.

I used to spend a lot of time doing 400 to 600 mile weekend rides in Baja. A few of the rides happened to be during the 1000 prerun time so Mikes would get packed. One weekend I was up there I shared a toast at mikes bar with Ivan, Johnny Campbell, and Roger DeCoster. I've got a pic somewhere around here. Pretty awesome!

This may sound stupid, but how do you get sponsored by Toyota or start a team? I've been wanting to build a Toyota powered rock crawler for koh. I've got my own truggy I've been building, but it's not much. I really believe that with the right team and (obviously funding) there could be a Toyota buggy to win, most of those rigs have ls motors, toyotas are way better!!

That build is insane. Any new modification with your Tacoma?
